The Lecture Series Linked in Regeneration 2018 is organized and hosted by young postdocs of the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies.

Senescence-associated reprogramming and stemness

 

Dr. Fan is a post-doctoral Fellow at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin at the Molecular Cancer Research Center. Her research focusses on the novel phenomenon on acquisition of stemness in cellular senescence, the theoretical end of a cell. Her group at Charite recently published a therapy-induced senescence model in Emu-myc lymphoma coupled with genetically switchable targeting of H3K9me3 or p53 to mimic spontaneous senescence escape. They demonstrated that cells released from senescence re-entered the cell cycle with strongly enhanced Wnt-dependent clonogenic growth potential. The observation was further extended to multiple cancer entities from human cancer cell lines to primary samples of human hematological malignancies. The unexpected senescence-associated stemness features exert detrimental aggressive properties upon cell cycle escape, and is found enriched in relapse tumor.
