Linked in regeneration” wants to offer young and senior scientists from Berlin to come together and discuss with internationally renowned guest speakers how to advance research into regenerative medicine and its translation into the clinics. The Lecture Series Linked in Regeneration 2018 is organized and hosted by young postdocs of the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies.

Engineering in vitro organogenesis

 

Professor Matthias Lutolf leads the Laboratory of Stem Cell Engineering at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). His lab works at the interface of materials engineering, microtechnologies and stem cell biology, with the overall aim of elucidating mechanisms and signaling networks that regulate stem cell fate and function. Prof. Lutolf’s lab was also among the first to design biomaterials for the generation of miniature organ-mimicking constructs called organoids. Organoids form through poorly understood processes in which initially homogeneous ensembles of stem cells spontaneously self-organize in suspension or within permissive three-dimensional extracellular matrices. Yet, the absence of virtually any predefined extrinsic patterning influences results in an extensive heterogeneity. Moreover, the current mismatch in shape, size and lifespan between native organs and their in vitro counterparts hinders their even wider applicability. In his lecture, Professor Lutolf will discuss some of his group’s recent efforts in developing next-generation organoids that are assembled by guiding cell-intrinsic self-patterning through engineered stem cell microenvironments.
