The focus of Professors Burmester’s and Prof. Hiepe´s clinical practice is rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue disease, Lyme arthritis, and systemic vasculitides. Their research activities include genomics and biomarkers in inflammatory rheumatic diseases, new therapeutic approaches for inflammatory and auto-immune diseases, role of memory plasma cells in autoimmunity and allergy, pathogenic and diagnostic relevance of autoantibodies, tissue engineering, regulatory T cells and autoimmunity, and animal models of autoimmunity. This research is carried out in close collaboration with the German Arthritis Research Center (DRFZ) in Berlin. Professors Hiepe and Burmester have participated in many industry-sponsored and investigator initiated clinical trials including studies of biologics such as TNF inhibitors and B cell depleting therapies, and of COX-2 inhibitors and small molecules (Phase I, II, and III).
