Since 01/2012 Group Leader "Spine Biomechanics" at Julius Wolff Institute, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin
Prof. Schmidt’s current research interests lie in spine biomechanics, mechanisms of intervertebral disc degeneration, evaluation of factors to increase the clinical success of the surgical treatment, development of new intervertebral disc regeneration strategies, such as cell seeded nucleus replacements, mechanobiologic enhancement of spinal fusions, development and optimization of spinal instrumentation techniques, 3D reconstruction and geometrical modeling of the spine, finite element modeling, spine surgery simulations, pathomechanisms of spinal deformities, in vivo spinal motion analyses, evaluation of spinal shape and function of subjects with and without back pain and after spine surgery, and measurements of spinal loads in sheep.
